LCD Weekly Issue - 038 -Recap Cohort 5

⛰️ Words from the mountains

Two weeks ago, we completed Cohort 5 of our course "Shifting from Human to Life-Centered Design." This cohort was particularly special because it was primarily led by our volunteer, Alice. In the previous cohort, we recognized the need to redesign several aspects of the course, and Alice was eager to take the lead. We reviewed the customer experience and redesigned the course, improving structure and flow.

The participants made the course a very special space by opening up and showing vulnerability. They connected through life experiences and the projects they worked on. Every Friday session was a joy! We also had significant age gaps, spreading wisdom from the early 20s to the 60s.

The course is project-based, meaning each participant selects a project to begin their Life-Centered Design Journey. The projects are fantastic—creative and filled with LCD! Below, you can read about and discover the projects of Cohort 5.

  • Chatty Pot : Litsening to nature. Bringing humans and nature into dialogue.

  • Collaborating with bamboo for the sit spot design.

  • How might a relationship with nature help someone with a TBI (traumatic brain injury) reshape how to be in a relationship with their new existence?

  • Moss as a designer. What if Moss was designing public spaces?

  • Strategies for coexisting in multispecies apartments.

  • Wild OS : Kids tech, more connection with nature and the outdoors.

  • Education for sustainability, with nature.

  • How might we celebrate indigenous wisdom to inspire humans to protect Lake Michigan?

  • Alpine Ecosystem: A Non-Human Persona Library.

We have our waiting list open for our 6 Cohort next Spring! Feel free to join if you are interested! Also, many fun things will happen exclusively for the waiting list members! Sing up here.

🐅 LCD in the Wild 5 Minute Beach Cleanup

I have been following the 5-Minute Beach Clean-Up since its beginnings. As the name implies, this Costa Rican initiative started as a simple movement anyone could do. Over the years, it has grown into a wonderful non-profit organization.

Its mission is to " globally address plastic pollution in the oceans through educational awareness and the implementation of strategic actions, striving to achieve a sustainable marine environment free from plastic waste."

I love their art installation of plastic fossils; check it out here.

Jeroen Spoelstra

I am a passionate designer and mountain biker focusing on bringing people forward using a human centered approach. As a designer you could call what I do Social Design, but nowadays there are hundreds of different design names. So for me I am a designer and try to be humble to the world. I like solving issues together with other people in co-design and I love helping people reach there goals.

I find inspiration in mountain biking, traveling and in my current home the Spanish Pyrenees. I use sports, traveling and being outside to get inspired for my work as a designer.

Design to me is constantly shitifing between making meaningful products to creating impactful and real solutions/ approaches/ business that can make a difference.

The Design profession shouldn’t solely be reserved for the designer (in developed world), but for everyone! I design for impact and help people bring out their little designer in himself or herself. I am not saying everyone should become a designer, but I do think people can use a little bit of design to help themselves forward in their personal/ professional life.
