LCD Weekly Issue - 017- Bird Vision
ποΈ Words from the mountains
Have you ever wondered how a bird, tree, or butterfly sees us humans? Me neither, but this weekend, something really interesting happened. The boys and I were walking in a forest, part of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. My youngest went in front, and suddenly, he came running back to show us a tiny bird following him.
Crazy thing, it was really following him, as if the curiosity between a two-year-old and a bird was reciprocal. My oldest and I were fascinated by their connection; it was strange, funny and incredible. Eventually, they parted ways, and we continued our little hike, picking up sticks and rocks, jaja!
So, this curious bird event got me in research mode, thinking about the connection between nature and children, which led me to this study :
"Effects of nature contact on children's willingness to conserve animals under rapid urbanization"
"Results indicated that both direct and indirect nature contact were positively associated with children's willingness to conserve wild animals. The knowledge of species and the likeability of species were also positively associated with willingness to conserve them. These findings suggested that it is important to foster environmentally responsible citizens, engaging children with nature-related activities and enhancing their knowledge and likeability of species in multiple ways."
And this wonderful paper: "Childhood nature connection and constructive hope: A review of research on connecting with nature and coping with environmental loss" ππΌ
Children are already life-centred by heart, slow-paced, observing their surroundings and ecosystems, curiosity on point, respectful and loving to nature. If we want to change how we design and create for a better future, we should gift our children (and ourselves) time outdoors and learn from nature.
To close off this section, I had to research birds' eyesight. How did the little bird view my son? Did you know birds have UV vision? You can read more in this article, "What makes bird vision so cool?"
π LCD in the Wild - The Agency of Nature
"The Agency For Nature is an experiment in the future of creativity. In the context of climate change and the collapse of nature, what if our creativity was used in service to life on earth? ...
Building a closer relationship with the rest of nature is incredibly positive for our mental health, and drives the kind of environmental behavior the world so desperately needs."

π₯ Hot in the School- LCD Talk #1 with Thorsten Jonas
Thorsten Jonas will join us during the first LCD Talk to explore the relationship between life-centered design and UX design. Over the years, we have received many questions about how to apply Life-Centered Design in the UX space. And it is time to answer some of them with Thorsten, an experienced UXer and sustainability advocate.
During our conversation, we will discuss Sustainable UX, its differences and similarities with Life-Centered Design, and why both approaches are relevant now.
In the first 40 minutes, Thorsten & Jeroen have an in-depth conversation, followed by the Q&A where you can ask questions about UX and Life-Centered Design.
Join the LCD Talk #1 and learn about Sustainable UX
Non-Human Persona Workshop Live!
Join us in Westerpark, Amsterdam, on June 11 for an afternoon of nature, design and Non-Human Personas!
During this active, imaginative, and immersive activity, you will start by giving nature a voice in the park by creating a Non-Human Persona. Then, we will collectively design a small prototype, a creation that will inspire park-goers to connect with nature and embrace sustainable actions.
Rest assured, we will provide all the necessary workshop materials. All you need to bring is your imagination!
As a family designer family, feel free to bring your kids or babies. Nature is fun for everyone!
