LCD Weekly Issue - 023 - Sing and talk to your plants!

πŸ”οΈ Words from the mountains

I vividly remember visiting my grandmother's garden in Costa Rica as a young girl. It had the most enormous roses I had ever seen, significantly larger than my hand at the time. Each flower was incredibly vibrant and colorful. Her fruit trees bore such an abundance of fruit that we could bring home bags and bags of lemons.

She always claimed that her secret to having such a lush, beautiful garden was to sing to the plants every morning and tell them how beautiful they were every afternoon. This became a core memory, and I am so happy to have returned to it this week.

Miranda van Gendt, a community member, shared two things that immediately piqued my curiosity! One of them is a documentary on Animal Communication, which is 50 minutes long, and I highly recommend watching it. It completely captivated me; it was so magical, beautiful, and incredible. While watching the documentary, I became interested in animal tracking communication (you'll understand why once you watch the video).

To my surprise (which was not really a surprise), my search only yielded the following results:

We are so disconnected from nature that technology always comes first.

Miranda also shared an event on Ecofluency, which is very similar to animal communication. Ecofluency is the ability to fluidly and accurately converse with more-than-human nature using the expanded spectrum of human sensory awareness.

Now, I am completely invested in this topic, imagine having the Ecofluency skills and creating Non-Human Personas!

πŸ… LCD in the Wild Ecofluency

Of course, I had to share more on the topic! Saskia Von Diest is the founder of Ecofluency.

"Ecofluency is growing into an organization to promote the science, art and practical magic of Nature communication worldwide, for individual and collective transformation."

Saskia offers retreats, workshops and more. Be sure to check her website.

πŸͺ„ Inspiration-  Speaking of Nature (article)

Our community member Anneke van Woerden inspired this week's section.

A great article by Robin Kimmerer Speaking of Nature, highlights the language and how our understanding of nature is influenced by the words we use.

πŸ”₯ Hot in the School - LCD Talks # 2: Life-Centered Design and Facilitation

Daniel Wirtz will join us during our second LCD Talk to explore the facilitation of life-centred and sustainable design processes and workshops. Designing more holistically changes the way we facilitate a design process. Decisions are made differently in other moments. The rhythm of a workshop might change. And much more

We invited our friend and co-founder of the Facilitator School to shed some light on facilitation. Together, we explore how facilitation might change when you organise workshops and guide the design process with a sustainable or life-centred purpose.

In the first 40 minutes, Daniel and Jeroen have an in-depth conversation, followed by the Q&A, during which you can ask questions about Life-Centered Design and facilitation.

Join the LCD Talk #2 and learn about facilitating a sustainable design process

Jeroen Spoelstra

I am a passionate designer and mountain biker focusing on bringing people forward using a human centered approach. As a designer you could call what I do Social Design, but nowadays there are hundreds of different design names. So for me I am a designer and try to be humble to the world. I like solving issues together with other people in co-design and I love helping people reach there goals.

I find inspiration in mountain biking, traveling and in my current home the Spanish Pyrenees. I use sports, traveling and being outside to get inspired for my work as a designer.

Design to me is constantly shitifing between making meaningful products to creating impactful and real solutions/ approaches/ business that can make a difference.

The Design profession shouldn’t solely be reserved for the designer (in developed world), but for everyone! I design for impact and help people bring out their little designer in himself or herself. I am not saying everyone should become a designer, but I do think people can use a little bit of design to help themselves forward in their personal/ professional life.
